Mumbai Indians clinched a thriller to come back from no where to register a last-ball victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
James Franklin clobbered an unbeaten 45, including 15 off the final over, to lead the Mumbai Indians to a dramatic five-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
With his side needing 21 runs from the final over, the New Zealander hit four consecutive boundaries before Ambati Rayudu, who finished on 17 not out off six balls, smashed the final delivery for six to clinch victory.
Franklin’s total came from just 23 balls and included five fours and a six as Mumbai finished on 178 for five in response to the hosts’ 175 for seven.
Mumbai’s victory denied Kolkata second spot in the table. Both sides still progressed to the play-offs, Mumbai in third and Kolkata fourth, and will meet again on Wednesday.
Franklin earlier claimed two wickets, dismissing opener Jacques Kallis for 59 and Yusuf Pathan for 36, to finish with figures of two for 35.
Kallis and Yusuf put on 57 for the fourth wicket before the Indian was dismissed.
Abu Nechim had already removed Gautam Gambhir for eight and Manoj Tiwary was run out for 35.
Ryan ten Doeschate then hit 18 from 12 balls before he became Nechim’s second victim.
Kolkata’s total looked like it might be enough when Rajat Bhatia took three wickets, removing Harbhajan Singh (30), Rohit Sharma (10) and Sachin Tendulkar (39) as Mumbai slipped from 70 for one after eight overs to 96 for four after 12.
But Franklin and Rayudu seized the initiative and tore into Lakshmipathy Balaji’s bowling.
The fast medium bowler claimed the wicket of Kieron Pollard for 18, but was punished at the death as he conceded 51 runs from three overs.
