Chasing 192 to win, Bangalore were reduced to a paltry 134/9 as Mumbai registered a thumping 57 run win.
The top two teams in the points table take on each other as the action shifts down south where Mumbai take on Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy stadium. While Mumbai have maintained a certain degree of consistency throughout the tournament and have been at the top of the table, Bangalore have fallen prey to inconsistencies despite having made a good start.
The Mumbai Indians are already in the final four and Bangalore, currently on 14 points, would like to win this one and put themselves in a similar position. A loss though does not put them out of contention as their run-rate is still on the higher side as compared to the other teams, but they would like to avoid last-minute palpitations. For Mumbai though, this will be a good game to test out some of their bench strength before playing the all-important semi-finals.
The two teams match each other in the batting department. While the Mumbai batting boasts of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Sourabh Tiwary, Ambati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo, Bangalore match them with Jacques Kallis, Robin Uthappa, Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen and Manish Pandey. The one worry for Bangalore would be the form of Kieron Pollard. The Trinidadian has started to show his true colours and a cameo from him has the potential to spoil the home side’s party plans. Mumbai’s bowling has been a revelation of sorts in the tournament.
The likes of Lasith Malinga, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh have not allowed any batsmen to dominate them and their second line of attack comprising of Dwayne Bravo, Pollard, Ali Murtaza and Ryan McLaren have bowled well within their limitations to not give an inch to the opposition. Bangalore bowling has also been quite good in the tournament.
Led from the front by their skipper Anil Kumble, the bowlers namely Dale Steyn, Praveen Kumar, Vinay Kumar and Jacques Kallis have always delivered in crunch situations. Kumble himself has bowled spectacularly, having taken 11 wickets, giving away just 6.23 runs per over. All-in-all another mouth-watering clash on the cards and assuming that Mumbai will try and test some of their bench guys, Bangalore will have some advantage first-up.
