Google expands Voice to iPhone

google

Google has released versions of its Google Voice service for iPhone and Palm Web OS systems.

The company said that the new tools would allow mobile users to access the service as a web-based application. Users will be able to place calls and access their Voice features by use of the mobile handset’s built in web browser. Web OS users will also be able to launch the service from the Palm Launcher tool.

Additionally, the mobile applications will allow users to send and receive text messages as well as present outgoing calls as the user’s own Google Voice number. Users will need both a Google Voice account and mobile phone service to use the new application.

By launching the Voice application as a browser based service, Google is able to sidestep restrictions that had kept the service off of many handsets.

When the company attempted to market Voice as a native iPhone App last year, Apple blocked the software from the App Store service. When pressed for an explanation, the company said that it was rejecting the Google Voice App on the grounds that it interfered with the iPhone’s built in telephone components.
