11 killed as Gorakhpur-Ayodhya passenger train hits truck

Gonda (UP), Sunday 1 November 2009: At least 11 people were killed and about 24 others injured when a truck was hit by a speeding train at an unmanned railway crossing in the district today, officials said.

The accident took place when Gorakhpur-Ayodhya passenger train rammed into a truck at a crossing near Chak Rasoolpur village, between Mankapur and Nawabganj railway stations.

“Eleven people were killed when a truck loaded with sand was hit by the train at an unmanned crossing,” acting district magistrate Sukhlal Bharati told PTI.

The impact of the collision could be gauged from the fact that the truck was blown into pieces, he said.

The injured have been admitted to nearby health centres, he said, adding senior officials have rushed to the spot.
