Actor Jagathy backs off from lottery advertisement  

Thiruvananthapuram, Saturday 28 August 2010: Setting a new trend Veteran Malayalam actor Jagathy Sreekumar declared his decision not to act in advertisements of Sikkim and Bhutan lotteries. Speaking to Media Jagathy made it clear that the decision was taken considering the recent arguments on the lotteries.

“ As an actor I have got some social liability. I usually don’t act in advertisement of liquor and cigarettes, even though I consume liquor. I was aware of the bad effects of those and hence exempted myself in promoting those things. I came to know of the bad phase of lotteries only recently and this message should reach the people” Jagathy added.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on Friday said that advertisement have become a major power regulating media. He said though its clear that advertisements of lotteries, which was nothing but gambling, were being published in plenty.

He called for greater responsibility on the part of media houses in the selection of advertisements and asked media that when the advertisement, which is known to them as harmful to people, media should disclose it and create awareness, he added.
