Thiruvananthapuram, Wednesday, August 21, 2011: Defence Minister AK Antony will inaugurate the scheme for supply rice at Re 1 a kg to people living below the poverty line, here on August 27.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister TM Jacob had said that the each cardholder would get 25 kg of rice a week from September 1 under the scheme. The scheme for supply of rice at Rs 2 a kg to various categories of people living above the poverty line would continue. However, the quantum had not been decided upon.

The Minister said that an undesirable tendency of people splitting cards by getting separate building numbers for their living quarters had been noticed. This amounted to misuse of the government scheme. The government would decide on suitable action to check this tendency after discussions in the UDF and the Cabinet.
