Baby sold for Rs 5000, mother held in T’puram   Baby

Thiruvananthapuram, Thursday 19 August 2010: The Medical college an unwed woman for allegedly selling her baby for Rs 5000. The woman arrested has been identified as Ambika Kumari (47) of Chadayamangalam.

A relative of the woman informed the police about the incident. The police soon traced the baby and handed it over to the court. The woman and the baby were later shifted to Athani as per the instruction of the Court.

The child was sold by the mother herself and the whole deal got exposed after the mother came back to claim back the child. The medical college police have registered a case against the mother.

Ambika Kumari sold the child three weeks ago. The deal was carried out with the help of a part-time sweeper in the hospital, who served as the broker. The mother returned back, claiming the child, resulting in war of words with the broker. Dr Lakshmi Priya, house surgeon of the hospital noticed this tussle going on near the canteen and promptly informed the medical college police. The police arrived in plain clothes and arrested the broker along with the mother.

Ambika Kumari claimed that she sold the child due to financial problems. According to the police the broker and the buyer of the child was spared, since the mother has no complaint.
