Non bailable arrest warrant against Balakrishna Pillai

Kochi, Wednesday, February 16, 2011: The Idamalayar special Court in Kochi today issued non bailable arrest warrant against Kerala Congress (B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai. The Court also rejected the plea given by Balakrishna Pillai to surrender before Court to avoid arrest.

Pillai’s counsel filed a plea in the Edamalayar special Court, seeking permission to surrender. He moved the special plea after receiving copy of the Supreme Court order convicting him in Idamalayar case.

Earlier report:-

The Supreme Court on February 10 convicted and sentenced the former Kerala Congress(B) Minister, R. Balakrishna Pillai; the former Chairman of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Ramabhadran Nair; and P.K. Sajeev, a close friend of Pillai, to one-year rigorous imprisonment in the Idamalayar Hydroelectric Power Project case.

A Bench of Justices P. Sathasivam and B.S. Chauhan allowed a special leave petition filed by V.S. Achuthanandan (who was then the Leader of the Opposition) against a Kerala High Court judgment acquitting the three after reversing the trial court verdict awarding five years imprisonment to them. He filed the appeal since the State did not prefer an appeal against the acquittal.
