Kottayam, Thursday 28 January 2009: Bypolls to three wards in the Kottayam municipality will be held on Thursday. The polls in the wards 3, 7 and 31 were necessitated by the disqualification of three sitting Congress councillors - Latha Thengumpathra, Chellamma Thambi and S Jayakrishnan- by the state Election Commission by invoking the provisions of the anti-defection law.

The heat of the polls is being felt through campaigning in the Tirunakkara ward, which is a general seat. Four candidates are in the fray in the ward. Ward No :3 (Chirayilpadam) is reserved for SC women and ward 31 (Pulinakkal) is reserved for women (general). Two are in the fray in Chirayilpadam and four at Pulinakkal.
Counting will be held on Friday.
