Calicut University film festival begins today

Malappuram, Wednesday 17 February 2010: A three-day world film festival organised by the Calicut University Film Society will begin today. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi will inaugurate the event at the Seminar Complex.

V.C. Harris, Kerala Chalachitra Academy member, will deliver the keynote address on film societies and cinema culture.

Six films that won international acclaim for dealing with the world politics will be screened at the festival, said T.M. Haris, convener of the festival.

Turtles Can Fly, a 2004 combined venture of Iran, Iraq and France, written and directed by Kurdish-Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi, will be the inaugural movie. It was the first film from Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. It will be screened at 6.30 p.m.

Tales from the Golden Age, a Romanian-French film directed by Hanno Hofer and Razvan Marculescu, will be screened at 8.30 p.m. on the same day.

The Violin, a 2008 black and white movie from Mexico, directed by Francisco Vargas, will be screened at 6 p.m. on February 18. The Battle of Algiers, a 1966 Italian war film, will be screened at 8.30 p.m. on the same day. The films to be screened on February 19 are Lumumba and Z.
