State to abandon ‘tidal energy project’   State

Thiruvananthapuram, Friday, October 30, 2009: The center has asked the state to abandon the much publicised generation of ‘electricity from waves’ project. The project which began on experimental basis spending crores at Vizhinjam was forced to abandon the project after the equipments meant for the project rusted.

The foundational stone for the project was laid 20 years before and the project is considered to be the first in the country and fouth in the world. The project planned by Chennai based National Institute of Ocean Technology.
Though the project was successful in the experimental basis, it could not churn out electricity for Industrial needs which led to the rusting of the main equipment Case Zone, now the equipment is posing threat to fishermen community also.
