Kochi, Friday 31 July 2009: To check new age criminals, the police force needs to be modernised, said Kerala Minister for Home and Vigilance Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
He was inaugurating the Computer Aided Police Services (CAPS) here on Thursday. Under this system, all the police stations will be electronically networked with the Police Headquarters and the public will have facility to lodge complaints online.
With the commissioning of CAPS, the number of crimes recorded in Kerala will definitely go up. The goal is to make Kerala Police the most technologically advanced force in the country, Balakrishnan said
Women and children are going to benefit most from CAPS, as it does away with the need to go to the police station physically to lodge a complaint, he said.
Every step is being taken to improve the efficiency of the force.
That is why mobile phones are being distributed from top officials to the constabulary in the force. With technical support from BSNL, all police stations are now being linked through broadband, Balakrishnan said.
Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose presided.
The CAPS will integrate Common Integrated Police Application (CIPA) and Crime Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS), along with providing facilities like sharing images and finger prints of criminals, tracking the progress of cases registered in any police station in the State, sharing Modus Operandi Criminal Data and better interaction among Special Investigation Teams.

The recent show organized by Kochi Police as part of the inauguration of CAPS revealed the true communal colour of Kerala Police. The intention of the show was to portray the Muslim community as terrorists which is really unfortunate. How Muslims in Kerala can expect justice from such a communalized authority.
