New Delhi, Thursday 11 June 2009: Group fights within the state unit of CPI (M) have reached in pinnacle, leaving the central leadership of the party confused. Compromise theories pacifying both the factions has been the mantra of Karat and Co till now and the result is there for everyone to see. The lone rebellious path adopted by VS Achuthanandan has put the central leadership in the back foot as a more determined VS closes in on Pinarayi Vijayan, his bitter foe.
VS has projected himself as the lone warrior against corruption in the Kerala cadre of the party and is now challenging the central leadership to show its spine and come out with a clear altitude. He wants the central leadership to throw out Pinarayi Vijayan from the chair of party secretary or accept his resignation from the post of CM. This puts the central leadership in a fix, as ouster of VS Achuthanandan would send wrong signals about the party’s fight against corruption.
Prakash Karat, Yechuri and S Ramachandran Pillai are leaving for West Bengal today to take part in state committee meetings reviewing the election debacle. The leaders would call upon Jyothy Basu and discuss the present crisis. The general impression that central leaders are giving is that there won’t be any change in positions in the state.
But the leaders acknowledge in private that matters have reached such a stage that if serious steps are not taken, then the party would be the ultimate looser. The central leadership is pondering over the options. Weighing each of them with clinical eye, so that the end result would be productive.
Above all these lies the fact that VS is armed up like a fidayeen, pledged up to end himself for a noble cause. The party cannot oversee the fire and determination in the eyes and body language of the veteran leader. On the other hand Pinaryi has the back up of the state unit, which makes him superior on party lines.
The central leadership is aware of the graveness of the situation created by Achuthanandan’s open statement on Wednesday, which was followed by the offer of resignation from the ministers loyal to Pinarayi. The PB and the central committee would be discussing the state matters and the message given by the central leadership is to wait till then.
Meanwhile the ministers loyal to Pinarayi are likely to submit their mass resignation to the state committee. The move is viewed as a pressure tactic to woo the central leadership before the PB and central committee meets.
