New Delhi, Monday, June 08, 2009: The CPM available Polit bureau, which met today morning, has decided to back Pinarayi Vijayan in connection with the SNC Lavalin case once again. The PB meet has decided to combat the case legally and politically.
Meanwhile, CPI national leader AB Bardhan, opined that, Governor RS Gavai has taken the decision as he was under pressure from other quarters.
Kerala Governor R S Gavai had called the head of the CBI office here to his residence on Sunday afternoon and handed over a 148-page report, giving his sanction to prosecute Vijayan.
Pinarayi Vijayan has been charged with abuse of his position as electricity minister in the Lavalin case in 1997. The CBI charged Mr Vijayan with colluding with the other accused to swing a sweetheart deal for the Canadian firm bypassing norms laid down by the government of India and central electricity authority. The CBI progress report had said it led to the loss of around Rs 86 crore.
The CPM leader is the ninth among the 11 accused in the report on the deal awarded to the company to renovate and modernise three power projects in Kerala’s Idukki district. The CBI had sought the governor’s permission to file a chargesheet as it concerned senior government officials.
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India had found irregularities in the contract with SNC Lavalin of Canada for renovation and modernisation of the Pallivassal, Chengulam and Panniyar hydro-electric projects in Idukki district. Mr Vijayan had played the lead role in reworking the deal signed between KSEB and SNC Lavalin.

This PB drama had been going on for some time. All the experienced comrades are out from PB; ex JNU guys and wives are not known for hard decisions. In fact, those talking of “legally and politically fighting the case” are not helping Vijayan but driving him out of active politics and stonewalling comeback.
The onus is on Vijayan to take the bull by horns and announce the decision to quit. Those who were witch hunting K. Karunakaran for palmolein case ISRO spy case, and Rajan case never said they were politically motivated.
Declaring innocent without trial can happen only when CPM rules India and then like Mrs. Gandhi did-Vijayan can declare emergency to escape judiciary Like Indira after the Allahabad HC disqualified her election.
