New Delhi, Tuesday, October 27, 2009 : According to an alarming report prepared by IIT Roorkee, the Mullaperiyar dam site has been prone to earthquakes which could record around 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale.

The final report has been submitted to the government after state had asked for a study in the area. IIT Delhi had also revealed similar observations about the dam. According to the report, the dam has been in a dangerous position and earthquake can destroy both main and the baby dam.

It was found that the tensile strength of the dam is also on the lower side and that the dam will not in anyway withstand seismic forces.Besides, the dam not being made of homogeneous material will behave strangely in the event of an earthquake. The forces on the lime-surkhi-concrete structure would be different at different locations.
