HC seeks details of probe in nun’s death case   HC

Kochi, Wednesday, August 31, 2011: today directed the police team probing a case relating to the mysterious death of a middle-aged nun (Mary Ancy) in Poonkulam convent, to furnish details of the progress of investigation.

Court ruled this while hearing a plea filed by sister Mary Ancy’s father- Mathew raising suspicion over her mysterious death. The Court also directed the police to submit an investigation report before September 19th.

Meanwhile as a major breakthrough in the case, two eye witnesses have come up with startling revelations that they had seen two men leaving the convent compound early morning on August 17.

According to eye witness accounts the two men had left the compound three hours before Ancy’s lifeless body was found near the water tank at about 5.15 am. The two men have been identified as Yuijn (a policeman) and Vijaya (local resident).

The crucial turning point came when the police had arrived at a conclusion allegedly without conducting a proper investigation that the Ancy had committed suicide, deeply depressed owing to an allergic skin disease.

The police team headed by Vizhinjam Circle Inspector recorded the statements of the eye witnesses. Meanwhile the State Human Right’s Commission (SHRC) have interrogated the convent staff in connection with the case.

The Commission’s investigating team reached the convent on Saturday and collected evidence. Speaking to the reporters here, SHRC acting chairman K.E Gangadharan expressed suspicion over the nun’s death.

The investigation is being conducted based on a complaint handed to the commission by human rights activist Jomon Puthenpurackal. He had criticised the police team for arriving at a conclusion even without conducting a proper investigation into the death.

Terming the police inference strange, he pointed out that there had been no way Sister Ancy could have lifted the immensely heavy concrete slabs and committed suicide given the fact that it required more than one person to remove the slab.

The State Women’s commission chairperson Justice D Sreedevi and the panel investigating officers had earlier interrogated the staff and collected evidence in connection with the case.

The police team investigating the mysterious death of Sister Mary Ancy interrogated her family members in Tiruvalla in connection with the case earlier. The probe team also found out that the nun was deeply depressed owing to an allergic skin disease.

Police said that based on the initial forensic report and post-mortem report, the police team had reached the conclusion that it was a case of suicide. Meanwhile family members of Ancy have raised suspicion over her mysterious death and have demanded a detailed probe into the case.

The police also ruled out any foul play by saying that if she was pushed into the small underground water tank than there could have been injuries on her body. The initial forensic report also ruled out that anyone else could have been involved in the death. There are no circumstantial evidences to prove that it is case of murder. These all points clearly that she ended her life.

More than 55 people have been questioned so far in connection with the incident. The body was found in the water pit by the sisters this morning. The nun went missing from her room where she had gone to sleep last night after prayers.
