Mumbai, Wednesday, January 28, 2009: The IPS officer Saji Mohan hailing from Pathanamthitta in Kerala who was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) with 12 kg of heroin in Mumbai is now being linked to a smuggling racket originating in Pakistan.
Officials say, the drug could have been sourced from Pakistan through a drug dealer in Jammu and Kashmir.
He got the consignment from Jammu so there has to be a cross-border connection. Drugs seized have a Pakistan marking,” says Deputy Chief Mumbai ATS.
Saji’s arrest has put the spotlight on the Narcotics Control Bureau, of which he was the zonal director in Chandigarh for nearly two years.
The NCB, in a damage-control mode, is now assisting the Mumbai ATS in this case. It raided Saji’s office and examined drugs seized from Saji’s home in Mumbai.
The NCB has decided to review all drug-related cases handled by Saji. A key task is to check if Saji had siphoned off drugs from seizures he had made.
During his tenure, Sajji had blown the whistle on many policemen, allegedly involved with drug dealers. In fact a report submitted by him last year had implicated six cops, who were later suspended.
Saji’s arrest has fuelled speculation that more top police officials may be involved in the drug racket. Another question that is being raised is that why Saji had suddenly opted for a transfer to Enforcement Directorate in Kochi in December last year.
