Kerala retains title in National school athletic meet  

Pune, Thursday, January 06, 2011: Kerala won the overall team title for the 14th consecutive year in the 54th National schools athletic meet held at Pune here on Thursday. Kerala has secured its first position with a total of 81 medals including 39 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 23 bronze medals.

The five day long National school meet witnessed four new meet records by Kerala athletes. On the final day of the school meet Kerala clinched 14 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals. Kerala has bagged gold in senior girl’s and junior boy’s 4*100 m relay event on Thursday.

Kerala continued its gold hunt today with- MD Thara winning gold in the girl’s cross country race event, Lijo Mani clinching gold in the junior boy’s 800 m event, KT Neena winning gold in the junior girl’s 3 km walk event, Alga Winny James coming first in the senior girl’s long jump event and Jessy Joseph claiming gold in the senior girl’s 800m event.

Sujith Kuttan emerged the fastest athlete and bagged gold after finishing at 10.91 seconds in the senior boys 100m event. PU Chitra of Palakkad clinched her third gold at the National school meet in Pune, after winning gold in the senior girl’s 3000m long distance event. Chitra had earlier bagged gold in the senior girl’s 5000m and 1500m long distance events.
