Kasaragod, Monday, November 16, 2009: PK Kunhalikutty, State general secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has alleged conspiracy behind yesterday’s police firing in communally sensitive Kerala’s Kasaragod district, that killed one IUML activist here yesterday evening.
Kunjalikutty said, stones were pelted at the activists from various quarters and the left parties should probe the incident. He also added that the police firing was unnecessary.
Two persons were killed, including one in police firing, and at least 30 policemen injured when a group of Indian Union Muslim League workers clashed with police.
A 20-year old activist of IUML-affiliated Muslim Students Federation was killed when police opened fire at party activists who pelted them with stones, while another IUML worker was stabbed to death by some persons at nearby Karanthakkad.
Police said they resorted to firing after the IUML workers engaged in widespread violence, attacked them and damaged a police jeep.
Police said they tried to intervene during an unscheduled “motorbike rally” organised on the sidelines of a reception accorded to former ministers P K Kunhalikutty and M K Munner and party leaders, including state president Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal.
