Chennai, Monday 05 Jan 2009: The nation-wide indefinite lorry strike from Sunday midnight will see LPG and petroleum tanker operators joining the stir on Tuesday.

All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) official said that more unions have joined the strike, which is likely cause shortage of goods and commodities, thus leading to a rise in their prices.
The Pongal (harvest festival) shopping could be the immediate casualty as clothes meant for Tamil Nadu from Gujarat and Maharashtra have not arrived, while there is a danger of other commodities not being transported as well.

The strike has already affected supply of vegetables, he said, adding that there could be shortage of LPG and petroleum also from tomorrow.
With three rounds of talks with the Union Transport Secretary having failed, only ministerial-level talks could bring about a solution, official said.

More than 50 lakh lorries have gone off the road in the country, pressing for a slew of demands, including reduction of diesel and tyre prices and uniform fees on national permit.
