Malaysia may impose ‘Fatwa’ against Yoga soon

Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday, October 29, 2008: Yoga may soon be outlawed in Malaysia, if a prominent body of clerics which is planning to issue a fatwa on the practice, has its way.

Malaysia’s National Fatwa Council is going to impose Fatwa on Yoga after Zakaria Stapa, a lecturer of University of Kebangsaan’s Islamic Studies Centre, yesterday advised Muslims who have taken up Yoga to stop practising it fearing that it could deviate their belief, local news reports said here today.

“A ruling would be made by the council’s Chairman, Abdul Shukor Husin, in this regard,” Deputy Director-General of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, Othman Mustapha, quoted as saying by New Straits Times online edition.

I know many Muslims practicing this wonderful art of life and leading a happy and harmonious life with profound mental and physical health. Hope, soon the authorities will realise the meaning of Ashtanga Yoga and its two pillars yama and niyama which teaches universal brotherhood. Yoga is the science of life, not any religion.

Somewhere else I read similar apprehensions expressed by fanatical Christians. I am really surprised. why these people fear yoga or anything else that has its roots in Hindu culture? Is it because their is religions are so brittle that practicing yoga will convert them to Hinduism? I never thought that Yoga has this much power to convert a Muslim of Christian to Hinduism if he/she practice it :-))
