Wayanad, Monday 29 March 2010: The dairy farmers in the district under the aegis of the Primary Milk Societies Association (PMSA) will observe a milk bandh today demanding to resolve the issues being faced by the milk producers in the district.
The organisers urged the government to provide Rs.25 as a support price for one litre of milk.
O.V. Appachan, district president, PMSA, told the media persons here that the dairy farmers had got Rs.10.50 for a litre of milk ten years ago, but the dairy farmers were getting less than Rs.15 for a litre of milk now.
But there is a five-fold increase in the price of fodder, cattle feed and other day-to-day commodities, he added.
He said that the current prices were not at all remunerative and the crisis in the sector was forcing many farmers to abandon the field.
The organisers also raised the demands such as providing 50 per cent subsidy for all types of cattle feed, provide enough veterinary medicines through the veterinary hospitals, rectify the anomalies of the of the price chart of the Milma and a hike in the margin provided by the Milma to the Primary Milk Societies.
