Thiruvananthapuram, Thursday, 02 February 2012: Modern waste processing plants will be installed in all the districts to solve the problems of waste management in the state, Chief Minister .

Briefing on cabinet decisions here, he said the plants were imminent in four districts and the existing waste treatment plants at Brahmapuram (Kochi) and Njeliyanparanbu (Kozhikode) will be upgraded using the most modern technology. The land for the plants had been committed at Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam and the work would start after the place has been identified, he said.

Government had taken steps to implement decentralized waste management process and it had reduced the amount of waste generated, he said, adding subsidy would be provided to set up the plants. He said ”money will, in no way be a constraint for setting up successful model of waste processing.

When a modern plant is installed, lot of areas will come as excess land where wastes are being treated.” The industrial department would bring in new projects aimed at developments in the excess lands as the modern plants would need only about five acres in place of the 50 or 100 acres that is in use.
