New Delhi, Monday, January 2, 2012: As the controversy over the Mullaperiyar dam rages on, the expert panel constituted by the Supreme Court-appointed Empowered Committee will submit its report today on the safety of the disputed structure.
The two-member technical team comprising C D Thatte and D K Mehta had visited the dam site recently after Kerala yet again expressed fears in the wake of recent tremors in the area. Kerala contends that a new dam should be built in the area as the existing dam is vulnerable to earthquakes and consequently poses a major risk to the lives of locals. Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, has rubbished these claims claiming instead that its neighbour is engaging in fear-mongering.
The Empowered Committee, headed by former Chief Justice of India Justice A S Anand, is looking in to the matter and is slated to hold its meeting in Delhi today.
