Shoranur, Tuesday 13 Jan 2009: Nine Janakeeya Vikasana Samiti members including MR Murali was sworn into Shoranur Municipality in Palakkad today. Shoranur Corporation Chairperson CK Jayalakshmi administered oath of office to nine new members to Corporation.
Last month the eight members of Janakiya Vikasana Samithi (JVS) who had trounced the CPM candidates in the by-election to the Shornur Municipality in Palakkad had met Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan to seek his help to make way for their swearing-in.
Janakiya Vikasana Samiti led by MR Murali had won the by-elections to the Shornur municipality, which was considered as the strong forte of CPM, maintaining its hold for over eight years causing a huge embarrassment to the ruling CPM.
The by-elections were necessitated by the resignation of nine CPI (M) councillors following factional feud in the party. The CPI (M) had expelled local leader and vice-chairman of the Shoranur Municipality M.R. Murali for allegedly not complying with a party directive to quit the post early this year.
Offering support to Mr. Murali, eight more councillors resigned from the council. Mr. Murali, who was identified with a group loyal to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, floated a new party, Janakeeya Vikasana Samithi.
