New Delhi, Wednesday, December 09, 2009: The Kozhikode twin blast case which was handed over to the premier investigating agency, NIA in view of the national ramifications of the case have been registered in New Delhi. Contrary to earlier reports, Mukesh Singh an IPS officer of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre would investigate the case instead of Sajid Farid Sapoo.
Two low-intensity blasts occurred at the KSRTC and moffusil bus stands here on March 3, 2006 within a gap of around ten minutes. Though no one was injured in the incident, the fact that the blast was triggered by a timer device evoked serious concern among the security agencies. It was assumed even at that time that the blast was an ‘experiment’.
The Crime Branch took over the case after the local police failed to make headway. It was the arrest of E T Sainudheen, the bombmaking expert from Kondotty, that led to a breakthrough in the case. He said he had heard Thadiyantavide Nazeer and Abdu Rahim discussing the Kozhikode blast and added that he had taught Nazeer and his gang to make explosives. Abdul Alim, another accused arrested by the police, said it was Nazeer who planned the blast.
The NIA took over the case as it was suspected that Nazeer conducted the experiment to convince his masters outside the country of his capability in such tasks.
