Nigeria’s acting president dissolves the cabinet

Nigeria, March 18, 2010: Nigerian Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has dissolved the cabinet, appointed by ailing president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, a little over a month after taking power.

Asserting his authority over the government in Africa’s most populous nation, Jonathan asked the ministers, who attended the weekly executive council meeting of state yesterday, to hand over the charge to the most senior person in their ministries.

“The acting president gives no reason for dissolution. There is no vacuum in the government as permanent secretaries will take charge,” former information minister Dora Akunyili told the reporters after the cabinet meeting.

A minister, who spoke to PTI on condition of anonymity, said “there were so many unfinished works which the announcement would affect”.

The move did not took many Nigerians by surprise as many of the ministers had tried to block the emergence of Jonathan as acting president.
