New Delhi, Monday, March 08, 2010: Opponents to the Women’s Reservation Bill today stalled proceedings in Parliament till 1400 hours, including in the Rajya Sabha which was to take up the landmark Constitution Amendment Bill that provides for 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Samajwadi Party, RJD and JD-U, known opponents of the bill, created uproar in the Upper House as soon as it met for the day.
However, they adopted a different strategy by disrupting proceedings in the name of delay in implementation of the Ranganath Misra Commission report that recommended reservation for minorities in government jobs.
The disruptions were caused on a day when the government was to move the Women’s Bill, pending for 14 years, for consideration and passage, coinciding with the International Women’s Day.
