Mullaperiyar, Tuesday 02 December 2008: The Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Water Resources, led by Rajapathy Sampasiva Rao, MP, which made a visit to the Mullaperiyar dam and evaluated its condition on Monday, said its report would be submitted to Parliament after a meeting.
Sampasiva Rao said the meeting would finalise the report and it was for Parliament to take a decision on the need for the construction of a new dam in place of the 113-year-old one. Both Kerala and Tamil Nadu had taken contradictory stands on the condition of the dam and its safety aspects, which had a bearing on the safety of people living downstream.
The visit of the sub-committee, consisting of nine Members of Parliament, assumes significance as many expert committees had already visited the dam and evaluated its condition.
Kerala MPs K.E. Ismail and P.J. Kurien, who are members of the sub-committee, presented the case of people upstream of the Periyar as the dam, in its present state, posed a threat to their safety
