Kochi, Thursday, January 21, 2010: Much to the embarrassment of government and state police, the Kerala High Court division bench today directed to leave the investigation into the sensational Paul Muthoot murder case to CBI.
The Court observed that, in order to regain the confidence of common man in judiciary it was necessary to order a CBI probe into the case. The investigations so far have been ambiguous and incomplete.
The Court has asked the CBI to complete the probe in six months.
The Court also lambasted IG Vincent M Paul for carrying out a hasty a press meet at a time when it was most uncalled for.
The Court opined that, the press meet could not be justified because even after twenty four hours Paul Muthoot was murdered, rather than nailing a culprit or recovering the murder weapon the police was enthusiastic to release its version of the murder.
The ruling has come upon the petition filed by Paul Muthoot’s father MG George seeking a CBI inquiry into his son’s murder. The plea highlighted 18 points in the manner in which the present probe by the Kerala police is going on, claiming the investigation is “based on a pre-written script”.
M.G George alleged that the police used TV channels to ‘propagate false theories’ in the murder, alleging this was meant to help the real culprits escape. He called for a detailed examination of the ‘real’ culprits’ political links and relations with people outside the state. He also claimed that the testimony of Manu, friend of George, who was in the car at the time of murder and of George’s driver was not convincing and hence only a CBI probe would bring out the real truth. Mr George says that the reason for such uninspired investigation was the political influence wielded by the prime suspects and their nexus with police officers.
The police in its affidavit had stated that, they have no objection to an external agency taking up the investigations.
The state police filed an affidavit before the Kerala High Court, following a petition of M.G. George Muthoot, the father of Paul George.
