PM condoles Kamala surayya’s death

New Delhi, Monday 01 June 2009: Expressing his grief at the demise of noted poet and author Kamala das, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today praised her work focusing on womanhood and feminism.

In his condolence message, the Prime Minister said “poems focusing on womanhood and feminism gained her recognition as one of the most noted of modern Indian poets”.

“Ms Das’s achievements extended well beyond her verses of poetry. She made a mark in painting, fiction, and as a syndicated columnist. Her columns touched on everything from women’s issues and child care to politics,” he said in his condolence message.

While appreciating her works, the Prime Minister said, “Her books of poems including ‘The Descendants’ and ‘Only the Soul Knows How to Sing’ were widely read and admired for their human sensitivity.

He expressed his sincere condolences to the bereaved members of her family and “thousands of her readers and admirers”.
