Quarry owners call off indefinite strike

Kalpetta, Tuesday 24 August 2010: An indefinite strike launched by the All-Kerala Quarry Association Wayanad district committee ended after a discussion with District Collector T. Bhaskaran at the Collectorate conference hall.

Bhaskaran assured the association leaders that the district administration would take steps to issue the documents needed to run quarries in the district after a joint discussion with revenue officials, leaders of the association, representatives of trade unions and political parties, Johnson Koovakkal, president of the association, said.

Following a Kerala High Court order, the Collector directed a few weeks ago to close 148 of the 154 quarries in the district that had been functioning with out Light Explosive Licence (LE-3 licence) and facilities required to store explosives.

The association leaders alleged that though they had submitted the applications for the licence three months ago, the district administration was yet to issue then. Hence the quarries in the district had been closed in protest since August 6.
