Thiruvananthapuram, Wednesday 29 July 2009: Kerala Women’s Commission today ruled out any suo motu intervention by it regarding the alleged derogatory remarks in the CBI charge sheet against Sister Sephy, an accused in the sister Abhaya murder case, saying it would not serve any purpose. ‘As the case is under the consideration of Judiciary, there is no need for any suo motu intervention,’ Commission Chairperson Justice D Sreedevi told News agency.
Blaming the media for blowing issues out of proportion after some women’s organisations protested the use of ‘vulgar’ language in parts of the charge sheet, she said, ‘There is no need to dig up the charge sheet now as the case is being considered by the court.’ On the alleged unsavoury language in the CBI charge sheet on aspects of the case like virginity test done on Sister Sephy, who figures as an accused along with two priests in the case, Justice Sreedevi said such tests had been done in many other cases.
Leftist women’s organisations had come out strongly against the ‘obscene’ expressions in the charge sheet, saying it was an affront to the dignity of a woman. The case pertains to alleged murder of young nun at a convent in Kottayam in 1992.
The CBI has stated in the charge sheet that Abhaya was murdered and dumped into the well of the convent allegedly by the three accused. Sister Sephy plans to move the Supreme Court against the virginity test done on her and the ‘vulgar’ language allegedly used by BI in the charge sheet, according to Church sources.
