Kochi, Thursday 25 June 2009: CPM Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan said that American imperialism was “supporting and encouraging” the “Maoist-Congress-Trinamool” violence in Lalgarh in West Bengal with a view to toppling the CPM government that has been in power in the State for three decades.
America was, “like during the 1959 anti-communist Vimochana Samaram,” coordinating the efforts of a spectrum of political forces ranging from the extreme Left such as the CPI (Maoists) to the extreme right such as the Trinamool Congress to bring down the West Bengal government, Pinarayi said.
He wondered why the media which had gone overboard over the Nandigram incident was near-silent over the series of killings of CPM cadre in Lalgarh.
In his keynote speech at a seminar on the ‘Nightmare of Vimochana Samaram,’ Pinarayi said the 1959 struggle launched by the “Congress, feudal and communalist forces” had been funded by the U.S. It had bribed the media and the intellectuals to campaign against the first elected communist State government in India.
He quoted the memoirs of former American ambassadors to India to back his argument that the U.S. had funded the anti-communist struggle. Referring to Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq, Pinarayi said American meddling in other nations’ affairs was still unabated.
Pinarayi said the Vimochana Samaram, the fodder of which was “undiluted lies” and the support of the anti-communist media of the time, had denied Kerala society unprecedented social advancements and great economic development.
He said it was a shame to refer to the agitation as ‘vimochana samaram,’ which, in fact, was an anti-national coup in that it aimed to topple a democratically-elected government. Referring to the discussions of a ‘second Vimochana Samaram,’ Pinarayi said this was a daydream. What should be debated was whether such a slogan should be permitted to be raised in the current social context.
