Kochi, Saturday,13 March 2010: Security has been tightened at Kochi following the instructions from Centre Ministry of Defence due to the intelligence report ,of the city being on the list of targets of terror attack.
More police force have been authorised for more security coverage in the main centers like Mattanchery Jewish Church, Seaport, Cochin shipyard, BPCL, Collect orate, Cochin Refineries, Railways, Police stations etc. Also arrangements have been made to keenly observe people. Vehicle checking also has been made more stringent.
Salman, an Indian Mujahideen cadre arrested early this month from Sidharthnagar on the Uttar Pradesh-Nepal border, had told his interrogators that while the Delhi chapter of the Indian Mujahideen had been decimated after the 2008 crackdown on the outfit in Delhi, Rajasthan and Gujarat, its southern brigade, known as Deccan Mujahideen, was intact and tasked by ISI-LeT to attack port cities and temples in the South India. It was on this regard that the security has been brought under constant check.
The Director General of Police Jacob Punnoos has visited Kochi and verified the security here on Friday. State Defence Minister has informed at Thiruvananthapuram about the instruction for caution the DGP had received from the Centre.
