Self-financing issue:Talks with student unions today

Thiruvananthapuram, Friday, July 03, 2009: The state government will hold talks with student unions today to discuss over the issues regarding self-financing colleges.

The talks held with left affiliated student unions yesterday had ended inconclusive yesterday.

The meeting has been convened in the wake of student organizations demanding the scrapping of the educational reforms introduced by the center.

AISF and SFI representatives who had yesterday held discussions with government informed that, they had conveyed their displeasure to the reforms including the three-tier fees structure to the cabinet sub committee and LDF representatives.

Meanwhile, the SFI has informed that they would go ahead with the secretariat stir as planned earlier.

Various student organisations had expressed their concern over the fact that colleges and universities in Kerala were not equipped to handle the semester system. Teachers, students and college authorities did not have any clear understanding of the semester system, he said.

The student organizations have also alleged that, the system would seriously harm the autonomy of universities and convert the departments, boards of studies, academic council and faculty toothless bodies.
