Sephys plea deferred; accused seek in camera trial

Kochi, Thursday, September 17, 2009: The Ernakulam has deferred hearing on sister Sephy’s plea against leakage of narco-analysis CDs to the media. Refusing to join the petition CBI informed court that, it is not opposed to an inquiry into the leakage of the narco-analysis CDs to the media and the case is fought between the three accused in the sister Abhaya murder case and media.

CBI’s counsel informed court that, for past one year the CBI is in possession of the CDs, which were handed over to Court earlier.
The CBI and Defence counsel also strongly advocated for an in camera trial to the case.

In her petition Sephy had alleged that the action of media should be viewed as contempt of court and media including the print media should be banned from publishing news items regarding the development of case.

Sephy also demands for a separate investigation as how the media was able to get hold of copies of narco analysis tests.

The electronic channels had aired visuals of the narco-analysis tests conducted on the three accused in the case — Father Thomas Kottur, Father Jose Putrikayil and Sister Sephy.

The visuals were aired after the CJM court handed over the copies of the CDs documenting the tests to the three accused.

Later, the court had restrained the channels from telecasting the tests.
