Aluva, Friday 12th February 2010: Shivaratri is observed with gaiety nationwide. According to Hindu mythology, it is celebrated in connection with the belief that Goddess Parvathy married Lord Shiva on this day. This year the Pradosha Vritha and Shivaratri falls on the same day, so people are thronging to temple.

The rituals have already begun in temples and centers for ‘Balitharpana(offerings to ancestors). Over 300 priests have arrived to lead the Balitharpana in the riverbeds of Periyar. In Aluva, renowned for ‘Balitharpana’, the temporary bridge connecting the two sides of Periyar is now opened for the devotees.

The services of Police, fire force and electricity department have been arranged on security lines, along with the 24-hour volunteer service. Balitharpana will start at 12 tonight and will continue on Saturday.
