The cannon law barring nuns & priests from getting married is unjustifiable. Worldwide priests are increasingly involved in child sexual abuse & other sexual crimes. The system of nun making and the life of a nun are against women. There should be a second thought by getting the right guidlines from bible and not from priests.
Yes. The priesthood never exist in the world. hey are also human beings. No one can stop these feeling from happening. It should be revisited and allowed to take the marriage as their wish. Or else these murders will continue.
Becoming a nun or priest is voluntary. Nuns or priests who later wish to marry/have families should simply change to different christian church that allows marriage instead of waiting for the Catholic Church to change. Better to have this scandal that hiding behind closed doors! Lack of sex does NOT cause CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE or MURDER! If it did, then why is there much more CHILD RAPE and MURDER among straight married men than ANY OTHER GROUP? I would bet 100 crore that you know more people abused by adult married men than any priest or nun! No one but the media talks of such things routinely…
The commentators seems to be under the wrong impression that the sexual crime rate amongst the celibate or the unmarried is more than that amongst the married. But the fact is otherwise. Or else the society should consider that promiscuity and licensiousness is a virtue. I feel many more years is required for it to happen, if at all it happens. Please remember that there is no compulsion to become a priest or nun or remain celebate. It is a choice. Once the option is taken, it has to be adhered to. The same rule applies in case of marriage also. If a person choses a spouse it has to remain a lifelong affair. So many crimes appear in newspapers day in and day out pertaining to extramarital affairs. Whether there will be commentators who treat that lifelong commitment in married life also breeds crime and hence the institution of marriage should also be stopped, or the partners should be given freedom to opt for extramarital affairs ?
—I agree that vows must be kept regardless if one is a member of the clergy or married. As humans, we all must preserve the sanctity of ourselves — the temple of God. Perverse affairs committed by ANYONE is sinful. I admire our Catholic clergy for willing to take such a vow of celibacy as a commitment to God.
—However, we Catholics must remember that wearing a cloak does not automatically give one a powerful shield to resist all temptations in life. The clergy are vulnerable humans just like the rest of us. If Satan had the audacity to try to tempt Jesus in his 40 day fast, what makes you think he would not tempt our clergy?? It is not easy for all of our priests to live up to the expectations. They are bound to make mistakes and I can only imagine the internal shame they are hiding. I am not here to judge which is why I believe it is our duty to pray for our clergy to have strength.
–In response to Seny’s comment regarding Catholic priesthood, it is interesting to note that the infestation that we see in our Catholic Church is not present in our fellow Christian Churches such as the Jacobite and Marthomite Churches, which allow priests to participate in the Sacrament of Matrimony. I am not saying every Orthodox priest is pure. Corruption can exist in any form of organization. But we definitely do not hear a string of sexual crimes occurring within their churches. This Catholic pattern of crime can be witnessed in any country of the world. and not merely in the state of Kerala, obviously.
—To all my fellow Catholics, please look up the Marian apparition in Garabandal to understand the infestation we see today. May God bless everyone in our new year!
