Kannur, Tuesday 20 July 2010: Congress MP from Kannur K Sudhakaran alleged that the mangrove park in Pappinissery was part of CPM’s secret project to set up a business enterprise. By planting mangroves on the river shores, the CPM was trying to extend the same to Vismaya Pak run by the party.
The park was established without the consent of panchayat, forest and environment departments and tourism department.
The government was not ready to announce the area as environmentally fragile land even after repeated demands by the officials. It is learnt that Rs 5 crore was spent for the park. If no construction had taken place, then where has the amount been spent?
There is a water theme park and food court in the park, which were built after destroying the mangroves.
The income tax department must conduct a probe on the source of income of the Eco Tourism Society and the CPM should disclose from where they got Rs 5 crore. The problem will not end with the closing down of the park. A probe must be conducted on setting up of the park without prior consent.
