Thiruvananthapuram, Tuesday19 May 2009: A three-member committee set up by the University of Kerala to investigate the reasons for the suicide by Anjana Sanjith, a fourth-year BDS student of the PMS Dental College, Vattappara, has reportedly concluded that the incident was triggered by the behaviour of two teachers of the college towards the student.
The committee submitted the report to Vice-Chancellor A. Jayakrishnan on Monday.
While one teacher asked the student to do procedures done by second-year students, another teacher wrote that the student should not be allotted any more patients, sources in the university said quoting the report. This had led the student to believe that she could not continue her studies at the college and may have driven her to suicide, the committee concluded.
According to sources, the committee also noted in the report that the college had no PTA. There was no college union or student body elections.
There was also no mechanism to address the grievances of students.
The report, however, does not recommend any action against the college or the teachers concerned, sources added.
