Thrissur, Sunday, January 29, 2012: Tension prevailed in the Chavakkad area following the custodial death of a middle aged man even as activists belonging to the CPM and NDF clashed outside the police station over the death of the person

The police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob which then started pelting stones at the police station. The incident took place when a man, Kumarampady Shahu, was taken into custody in connection with the tension during the Manathala pallilkazhcha festival.

The police said the man collapsed immediately after he was taken into custody and died before reaching the hospital. In the meantime, Human Rights Commission registered a case on its own on the death of Shahu.
