Idukki, Wednesday, October 28th 2009 : Dr S. K Pyarelal, a former reader of Ship Technology at the Cochin University, examined the boat that capsized in the river Periyar near the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary that killed forty five tourists. He stated that allowing eighty people on board was way more than what the boat could ferry . This was a serious lapse in the part of the Kerala tourism Development Corporation. The expert said that, the KTDC had not supervised or monitored the boat ‘Jalakanyaka’ while it was being built. The boat should not have had an upper deck. The 188-page report, further stated , the boat was inclined to the right by 2.9 degrees, such a tilt was not allowed in the design as it could cause instability to the structure. The expert team had inspected the boat belonging to the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation on the request of the crime branch of Kerala police. Lashing out at the Chennai based “Vigneesh” and boat designer, Anantha Subramaniam, Dr Pyarelal said, both cannot escape from the responsibility of the tragedy.
