Thiruvananthapuram, Tuesday, February 08, 2011: The Kerala government proposes to form a special enforcement wing to tackle traffic cases in view of high rates of road mishaps, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here today. On an average 4,000 people are killed in road accidents in a year and about 40,000 others suffer injuries, he told the assembly during Question Hour.
“Formation of a special traffic enforcement wing dedicated to handle accident cases and traffic offences is under consideration, “he said.
Members from ruling and opposition sides expressed serious concern over the problem and wanted traffic rule violation cases to be handled sternly, without showing any lenience to offenders.
Deputy leader of Congress in the House, G Karthikeyan, said there had been instances of even policemen on traffic duty using mobile phones while controlling traffic at peak hours.
