Tribals encroach Cheruvally estate, police intervenes   Tribals

Kottayam, Thursday, 10 June 2010: The Cheruvally estate held by Believer’s Church was today encroached by tribals under the aegis of Adivasi Kshema Samithi(AKS), a wing of the (Marxist) . The police and the workers of the estate obstructed their move.

The encroachers arrived at the spot at 3 in the morning and erected huts as a part of their strike. Around twenty-five tribal families under organizations like ‘Dalit Bhoosamara Vedi’, ‘Bhoosamara Janakiya Aikyavedi’ took part in the protest. However, the estate workers destroyed 11 tents erected by them. The police reached the spot by around 8 in the morning.

It was also reported that the Adivasi Kshema Samithi led a march to Pooyamkutti Pinavurkkudy forest land in Ernakulam district. The committee, a pro -CPM organization, took out a march demanding land for the landless tribals. The area comes under the biodiversity locale of the Pooyamkutty forest division. Around 100 activists came up with protest here. They agitated here to provide land for the landless.

Minister for Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities AK Balan said that the incident at Pinavurkudy is not an encroachment issue but only a strike and the government would provide land for all landless
