Thiruvananthapuram, Sunday 31 May 2009: State especially the poetic world has expressed grief over the demise of noted poet and author Kamala Suraiya.
The news of Kamala’s demise was a great shock to me, said noted writer M T Vasudevan Nair. We shared a very good relationship. Though she was ailing for some time I never though she would leave us all very soon.
Writer K G Sankarapillai said she lived conveying the message of openness and susceptibility. She sang about love sitting in each tree. The Malayalees after reading her stories loved themselves. He said that everyone will remember her stories, poems and memoirs forever.
Sukumar Azhikode said that her literature had lead everyone to follow their heart.
Poet Sugathakumari said that Kamala contributed much for Malayalam literature and Malayless will be grateful to her for all the gifts she gave in the form her literature.
Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said Kamala’s death was an irreparable loss to the country and the state. It is a great loss to English and Malayalam literatures. Kamala attained national fame through her English poems and Kamala’s language was the language of love, which formed the basis for both her novels and poems, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandhan said. ‘In all her works, love was the focus and I remember meeting her in Kochi when she decided to move to Pune. I requested her not to leave Kerala but she promised to come back,’ Achuthanandan told reporters here.
Governor R S Gavai today mourned the death of eminent Malayalam writer Madhavikutty.In a condolence message here he said, ”I am shocked and saddened at the passing away of Kamala Suraiyya (Madhavikutty), renowned Malayalam and English writer”. ”Perfectly at ease with both prose and verse, she won the affection and admiration of an entire generation by her intimate tales of love and longing. I am sure, she will be remembered for long for her bold and brilliant revelations on human relations”.
Defense minister A K Antony felt it is a personal loss like losing a member from his family. He said that Kamala’s family had helped him whenever he traveled out of the state, especially to Delhi via Mumbai.
Education minister M A Baby said that Kamala would be remembered forever as long as her language and literature exists. She was a well-known writer and through her writings she had proved that she could shine in any area whether it is poem, stories or memoirs.
Kamala was a master of simple style, said Union MoS for Agriculture K V Thomas. He said that her writings with its openness was enjoyable to each and every person.
