Kasaragod, Monday, November 23, 2009: A high level committee presided by leader of opposition Oommen Chandy has begun its tour to the trouble hit areas of Kasaragod today.
The team also has KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala, JSS leader Gowriamma, Kerala Congress (M) leader KM Mani, and Muslim League leaders. The team would visit the homes of victims who were killed in the Kasaragod firing.
Later in the day, the high level committee would take part in the decisive UDF district level meet, this meeting would give final shape to the future course of action to be taken regarding the incident.
Earlier, a UDF sub committee headed by Janata Dal (Secular) faction leader M.P. Vierendrakumar had visited the place and had recommended a judicial probe by a sitting judge, it also pointed out the attempts to give the clash a communal colour.
It put the blame on the CPI(M) leadership for this and felt only a judicial probe would reveal the party’s alleged conspiracy in stoking tensions in Kasaragod and Kannur districts, which had reported violence in the aftermath of the police firing, based on this the UDF high-power committee, which met here had insisted on a probe by a sitting judge of the High Court or a person in the rank of a sitting district judge.
It also wanted the government to discuss the terms of reference of the judicial probe in view of the alleged gaps in police investigation into the circumstances leading to the police firing that resulted in the death of an Indian Union Muslim League worker.
Two Muslim League activists were killed in the Kasaragod violence last Sunday. One youth was killed in the police firing and body of another youth with stab wounds was found later. Kerala cabinet has ordered a judicial probe into the violence.
