Left routed, UDF registers thumping win in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Tuesday, November 10, 2009: Inflicting a crushing blow to the ruling CPI (M)-led LDF in Kerala, a resurgent Congress-led UDF bagged the three Assembly seats in Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kannur.

AP Abdullakutty won the Kannur seat with a majority of 12043 votes. AA Shukkor emerged winner in Alappuzha with a majority 4729 of votes. In Ernakulam, Dominic Presentation won the assembly seat with 8620 votes.

The three seats fell vacant after the sitting Congress legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha in the April-May general elections. The sitting MLAs, KC Venugopal from Alappuzha, KV Thomas from Ernakulam and K Sudhakaran won the Lok Sabha seats. As Congress won all the three seats, it would man a huge erosion of political pride for the Left.
