Kozhikode, Saturday, October 01, 2011: Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama, a Muslim outfit, today demanded that the Kerala government ignore the Justice V R Krishna Iyer headed Commission on Rights and Welfare of Women and Child, recommendation for a two-child norm, in the draft of Kerala Women’s Code Bill.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar, General Secretary of the outfit said the draft bill was outdated and impracticable. The claim that starvation and poverty was due to increasing population was laughable, he said, adding available food in the country should be properly distributed among people.
Several Muslim organisations in Kerala have opposed the draft bill. Indian Union Muslim League State President Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal, had recently said the two-child norm proposed in the bill is ‘inhuman’ and the Government should reject the recommendations which violates individual liberty and fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.
