Thiruvananthapuram, Monday, March 01, 2010: Cracking the whip on eve teasers, Kerala Women’s Commission is all set to launch an SMS alert service to nail them.
Under the service, if a woman finds herself being harassed by teasers, she just needs to type the word ‘Vanitha’ on her mobile and after leaving a space, message it to the Commission on a number to be announced shortly.
On getting the alert, the help desk at the Women’s Commission would inform the nearest police station from where the message is sent for the help of the woman in trouble.
However, before doing so, a preliminary verification would be done to ascertain if the message is genuine, commission secretary V.P. Ramachandran told PTI.
“We have worked out the nitty gritty of the proposal and submitted it to the Government for clearance from the IT department. Discussions are also on with service providers like BSNL. We expect the system to be through by this month end,” he said.

The messages would be simultaneously received on the main server of the Women’s Commission office and the mobile phones of the designated officers.

The Commission has also introduced SMS facility to reply to queries on the status of pending cases by typing ‘Vanitha’ followed by the file number of the case concerned.
An online facility for lodging fresh complaints has also been launched by the Commission
